About Ocean Metrics

Ocean Metrics LLC is a one-person, U.S.-registered environmental data science studio (St. Petersburg, Florida). I build the analyses, interactive maps, and open-data platforms that ocean science programs depend on — for federal agencies like BOEM and NOAA, and for research programs like CalCOFI and the Marine Biodiversity Observation Network.

My background is in marine spatial ecology. I earned my PhD at Duke University’s Marine Geospatial Ecology Lab, building cetacean distribution models and contributing to OBIS-SEAMAP; served as a senior analyst on the Ocean Health Index at NCEAS; and lectured on GIS and environmental informatics at the UCSB Bren School and at Duke. Across all of it, one principle holds: science should be reproducible — callable, testable, and open to inspection.

From EcoQuants to Ocean Metrics

Ocean Metrics is the continuation of EcoQuants LLC, which I founded in 2017. The EcoQuants name came from the Zen ensō — the incomplete circle — with a hidden “Q”: a reminder to model the world quantitatively while embracing its uncertainty. Ocean Metrics carries that idea forward, sharpened to what I actually do: measure the ocean, honestly and rigorously, and hand back tools that keep working after the project ends.

How I work

• Analyze — reproducible pipelines in R and Python: species distribution models, spatial statistics, and data engineering that others can rerun and trust.
• Develop — interactive maps, dashboards, and open-data platforms backed by APIs, spatial databases, and cloud tiling.
• Train — as a certified Software & Data Carpentry instructor, helping teams become self-sufficient in reproducible research and spatial analysis.
